The latter's grain production had also been completely transferred to the new Chita distillery a year earlier. Hakushu was built at the foot of the Southern Japan Alps, a location deliberately chosen by Suntory to create a contrast with the style of spirits produced in Yamazaki. Interestingly, a second distillery (called Hakushu East) was built in 1981, which features stills of varying shapes and sizes, allowing the production of distillates of a wide variety of characters. This contrasts with the now-dormant older facility (called Hakushu West), which had 24 large stills, all uniform in shape and size, but capable of producing only one specific type of distillate.
