Cigar Case

What is Cigar Case? A cigar case is a portable carrier designed to hold and protect cigars during transport, typically built from leather, wood such as Spanish cedar, or metal. Designs range from simple soft leather pouches and telescopic sleeves to hard-shell travel humidors with built-in humidification systems. The form has been around since at least the 1840s, when a documented French example was already in circulation, and today it remains a staple of tobacco and smoking accessories. Unlike a full humidor, which is a stationary storage unit, a case is meant to travel with you.
Materials and Construction
Cigar cases are made from a wide palette of materials. Exteriors commonly use soft or hard leather, stainless steel, silver, polymer, or ABS plastic, while interiors often rely on Spanish cedar. Cedar is preferred for the lining because it helps maintain humidity and adds a complementary aroma as cigars rest inside.
Two main construction styles dominate. Spanish cedar-lined cases are typically two-part and impact-resistant, with a sliding adjustment that lets the case fit different cigar lengths. Telescopic cases, by contrast, use a grooved interior and a sliding telescoping top; they tend to be softer and usually skip the cedar lining. Leather exteriors are frequently creased against dies so the silhouette matches a specific cigar ring gauge.
Capacities and Travel Humidors
Pocket cases generally carry 2, 3, 4, or 5 cigars, while larger formats step up to 10, 15, 20, and even 60-cigar travel humidors. Ring gauge accommodation varies by model, with common maxima of 50, 58, and 60.
Travel humidors sit at the upper end of the category. They are larger hard-shell cases that combine cedar lining, foam insulation, and a humidification device to replicate home-humidor conditions, typically around 65 to 72 percent relative humidity. Some modern cases also integrate slots for accessories such as a cutter or lighter, turning the case into a complete on-the-go kit.
How to Choose One
The right case depends on how you smoke and how far you travel. For an occasional cigar carried in a jacket pocket, a soft leather or telescopic case sized to your usual vitola is enough. For longer trips or premium cigars that need stable conditions, a cedar-lined hard case or a small travel humidor with active humidification is the safer choice.
Match the case to your cigars first: confirm the maximum ring gauge and length, then consider capacity and whether you want integrated accessory slots. Established makers in the category include Alfred Dunhill, Davidoff, Diamond Crown, and Xikar, among others.
