Grand cru

(38 products)

Sometimes you'll see the label "Champagne Premier Cru" or "Champagne Grand Cru" on a bottle of Champagne. It means the wine is produced on the appellation's best terroirs, a guarantee of quality and provenance. In Champagne, unlike in Bordeaux, the term "cru" refers to entire communes. They are classified on a scale from 100% to 80% based on the quality of the grapes, soil, and exposure.

Features of Grand Cru

The key characteristics of Grand Cru include a complex flavor with concentrated notes of citrus, and green apple. The drink boasts fine, persistent bubbles thanks to a unique production method. Extended aging on the lees (often 5+ years) adds a toasty, nutty depth.

This premium Champagne is typically brut and has high acidity. Its aging potential ranges from 10 to 30 years. The best Champagne is more expensive than standard Champagne due to its limited production and prestige.

How Grand Cru Is Made

Grand Cru Champagne is produced strictly according to the traditional method from grapes harvested in 17 villages, all of which bear the Grand Cru label in Champagne, France. Producers (specialist houses or small vineyards) must pay a premium price for these grapes. The price reflects their superior quality and ideal terroir.

The winemaking process is meticulous, requiring longer aging on the lees than in typical Champagne production. Experts hand-pick the grapes, then press and ferment them to produce still wine. Secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle with the addition of yeast and sugar. It creates fine bubbles.

This emphasis on selected raw materials, combined with long aging, allows the region's winemaking potential to be fully realized.

Food Pairing with Grand Cru

Grand Cru Champagne is distinguished by its complex and deep flavor. It requires pairings that respect its quality. Choose rich, aromatic dishes with red Grand Cru varieties, including roasted or grilled red meats, game, or hearty stews. Aged red wines offer earthy flavors like truffles and mushrooms.

White Grand Crus pair beautifully with seafood, poultry, or veal, often with creamy or buttery sauces. Don't forget to pour a glass of Champagne France with lobster, scallops, or roast chicken.
