What is Claro? Claro is a cigar wrapper color classification that denotes a pale, light-colored leaf ranging from pale green to light tan or yellow-brown. It sits near the light end of the wrapper spectrum, just one step darker than Candela (also known as Double Claro), and is almost always produced from shade-grown tobacco. The leaf is prized for its smooth, thinly-veined appearance and its mild, mellow contribution to a cigar's overall character. While the term sometimes appears in compound names such as Colorado Claro, on its own it signals a wrapper at the lighter, gentler end of the palette.

Cultivation and Curing

Claro wrappers are typically grown under cheesecloth tents that shield the plants from direct sunlight. This shade-growing technique slows photosynthesis and yields a thinner, smoother, paler leaf than tobacco grown in open fields. The result is a wrapper with fine veins and a supple texture well suited to the visible outer layer of a cigar.

After harvest the leaves are air-dried and cured until they settle into a golden-tan color. Wrapper tobacco, including Claro, is fermented separately from the coarser filler and binder leaves, a process designed to refine flavor and produce a clean, even-burning sheet. Connecticut shade-grown wrappers are among the most sought-after Claros, though leaves in this range also come from Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Flavor and Place in the Spectrum

On the palate, Claro contributes a mild to medium-bodied smoke with a creamy, mellow character. Tasting notes commonly include cedar, nuts, and a touch of mild sweetness, while lighter examples add a faint dryness that lifts the overall profile. Because the wrapper is delicate, it tends to support rather than dominate the filler blend, making Claro a popular choice for smokers who prefer subtlety over intensity.

Within the standard color spectrum running from lightest to darkest, Claro is the second-lightest shade, sitting between the very pale, slightly greenish Candela and the warmer Colorado Claro. Understanding this position helps when reading a cigar's description: a Claro wrapper signals a gentler, more nuanced smoking experience, well suited to morning cigars, lighter pairings, or anyone exploring the category for the first time.
