Alcohol by volume of beer.

What is ABV (Beer)? ABV (Beer) is the standard measure of a beer's ethanol content, expressed as the volume of pure ethanol divided by the total volume of the beverage at 20 °C (68 °F). Unlike spirits, which are measured directly, beer's ABV is derived indirectly from the change in specific gravity between the wort and the finished beer. Most beers sit in the 4–6% range, though the broader category stretches from around 2.0% up to roughly 10.0%, with specialty styles pushing even higher. Because alcohol and water mix with a slight volume contraction, ABV is not a simple volume fraction and must be defined under standardised temperature conditions.

How Brewers Calculate It

Brewers track fermentation with a hydrometer, recording Original Gravity (OG) before fermentation begins and Final Gravity (FG) once the yeast has finished its work. The difference reflects sugars converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide, with attenuation describing how much of the wort's fermentable sugar the yeast actually consumed. The standard simplified formula is ABV ≈ 131.25 × (OG − FG), which works well for everyday strength beers.

For stronger beers above roughly 6–7%, the simplified version drifts off, so a more accurate formula is used: ABV ≈ 133 × (OG − FG) / FG, correcting for the density of the finished liquid. Wort sugar content can also be expressed in degrees Plato (°P), favoured by European brewers, or degrees Brix (°Bx), more common in wine and juice work; both relate back to specific gravity.

Yeast Limits and Style Ranges

Brewer's yeast typically tolerates only about 8–12% alcohol before fermentation stalls, which sets a natural ceiling for non-distilled beers. To push beyond that, brewers turn to special high-tolerance yeast strains, freeze concentration as in eisbock, or blending — eisbock itself can reach around 14%.

Style ranges follow predictable patterns. Light lagers sit around 3–4%, standard American, Helles and Czech pilsners land near 4.5–5.2%, and American pale ales run 4.4–5.5%. American IPAs climb to 6–7%, while double and imperial IPAs reach 8–12%. Irish dry stout stays modest at 4.0–4.5%, but imperial stouts and barley wines often hit 8–12% or more.

Labelling and ABW

Many jurisdictions regulate beer categories by ABV thresholds, with 'alcohol-free' often capped at 0.5% in the EU and UK, though the exact limit varies by country. These rules shape what brewers can call low-alcohol or alcohol-free on the label.

ABV should not be confused with ABW (alcohol by weight), where ABV ≈ ABW × 1.267. Some U.S. labels historically used ABW, which made the same beer appear weaker on paper than its ABV figure would suggest — a common source of confusion when comparing older American labels against modern international ones.
