Espadeiro Sparkling Vinho Verde

Sparkling style of Vinho Verde.

What is Espadeiro Sparkling Vinho Verde? Espadeiro Sparkling Vinho Verde is a Portuguese sparkling rosé made from the dark-skinned Espadeiro grape, grown in the Minho region of northern Portugal under the Vinho Verde DOC. Recognized for its bright salmon-pink color, lively red-berry character, and fine, persistent bubbles, it sits firmly in the lighter, fresher end of the sparkling-wine spectrum. The grape's natural ability to retain CO2 during winemaking gives these wines their signature spritz, making them a distinctive expression of one of Portugal's most historic wine regions.

Origin and Region

Espadeiro is a red Vitis vinifera variety native to northern Portugal, encompassing several variants including Espadeiro Tinto and Espadeiro Mole. It is planted primarily in the Minho region for Vinho Verde production, with additional cultivation across the border in Galicia, Spain. Within the Vinho Verde DOC, which has held protected status since 1984, Espadeiro stands alongside Vinhão and Borraçal as one of the recommended red grape varieties.

The Vinho Verde region is a substantial producer, generating roughly 85 million liters annually from about 600 bottlers. Most Vinho Verde wines historically carried a slight spritz derived from in-bottle malolactic fermentation. Today that sparkle is typically added through artificial carbonation, usually at less than 1 bar of CO2 pressure, which means many examples do not officially qualify as semi-sparkling but still deliver the region's trademark freshness on the palate.

Style and Tasting Profile

Espadeiro is used principally to produce rosé wines, both still and sparkling, that are typically dry, fresh, and fruity. The color ranges from a bright salmon pink to a light orange hue, and the bubbles are smooth and well integrated thanks to the grape's strong CO2 retention during winemaking. When vinified as a red, Espadeiro yields light-bodied wines with ruby to light-ruby color and moderate acidity.

On the nose, expect red berries such as strawberry and raspberry, citrus accents, and the occasional hint of tropical fruit. The palate remains crisp and dry even where a touch of residual sugar is present, keeping the wine refreshing rather than sweet. Alcohol sits at the lighter end of the Vinho Verde range, well below the 11.5 to 14 percent reached by Alvarinho-based whites, which reinforces the easy-drinking character of these sparkling rosés.

Food Pairing

The combination of low alcohol, bright acidity, and gentle effervescence makes Espadeiro Sparkling Vinho Verde a versatile partner at the table. It works particularly well with spicy and aromatic cuisines, where its freshness tempers heat and lifts complex seasoning.

Try it alongside Thai salads, dishes built around paprika, or richer preparations such as mole sauce. The red-berry fruit and lively bubbles cut through bold flavors while keeping each sip light, which is exactly the role this wine has played on Portuguese tables for generations.
