Whiskey Advocate
Part of the permanent Ardbeg range since 2008, Corryvreckan is created from a blend of standard Ardbeg and Ardbeg aged in virgin French Limousin oak casks. Smoky bacon and seaweed, plus dark berries, prickly spices, walnuts, lemon, and sweet peat on the nose. Sweet and savory on the palate, with more lively spice, woodsmoke, phenols, and licorice. The finish is lengthy, with peat, sea salt, pepper, and black coffee.
Description
Compatibility
Whiskey is an excellent digestif. Adding ice or water will reveal the multi-layered aroma and taste of the drink more fully.
Color
Whiskey amber color with a golden sheen.
Scent
The seething whirlpool of whiskey aroma plunges into a riot of notes of tarred rope, creosote and linseed oil. Warmed in the hands, rough masculine notes are replaced by hints of melted dark chocolate and blackcurrant, brown cane sugar, juicy cherry pulp, nuances of earth and pine branch. The addition of water will bring out the final notes of the fragrance - cayenne-flavored steak, oysters in pepper sauce, bacon, mint and molasses, sweet vanilla, spicy cloves and lots and lots of rough seas.
Taste
Deep and sharp, with a viscous texture, the taste of whiskey starts with dense notes of peat, chili steak and seaweed. The taste develops, spilling out the nuances of tar and espresso coffee, woven with hints of bitter almonds, crushed dark berries (blackcurrant, blueberries) and cherries. Then there are notes of pecan, star anise and violet. The aftertaste is long, deep, voluminous, full of notes of resin, black coffee, honey, chocolate-covered cherries and spicy pepper sauce.
