About Jagermeister

Jagermeister liqueur originated in the German city of Wolfenbüttel. It is a herbal liqueur with an ABV of 35%.

The history of Mast-Jagermeister, the sole producer of this liqueur, began in 1878. Wilhelm Mast founded a vinegar company in Wolfenbüttel and also distilled wine.

Wilhelm's son, Kurt, joined his father's business and expanded it, starting a wine distribution business. He was experimental and in 1934 presented a recipe for what he considered the perfect herbal liqueur.

In 1935, production of Jagermeister Cyprus began in Germany.

The drink's name literally translates from German as "master of the hunt." The liqueur was originally intended as a drink to be consumed before and after a hunt.

The Jagermeister logo originates from the legend of Count Hubert of Liège. According to legend, he saw a stag with a shining cross in the forest, after which he converted to Christianity and donated all his property to the church. After his death, he was declared a saint and became the patron saint of hunters.

Kurt Mast, founder of Mast-Jagermeister, saw a connection to the drink in this story and adopted the stag symbol in honor of the true "Jagermeister."

The liqueur's true recipe remains unknown; the company keeps it a secret even from most of its own employees.

It is known that 56 different herbs, roots, and spices are infused for production. At various times, citrus zest, licorice, anise, poppy seeds, saffron, ginger, juniper berries, ginseng, sugar, and caramel have been mentioned among the ingredients.

The ingredients are weighed and ground to create dry mixtures, then infused with alcohol and mixed in the required proportions. After maceration, the drink is aged in an oak barrel for at least a year, then water, alcohol, caramel, and sugar syrup are added. Jagermeister alcohol percentage is 35%.
